The Department of Environment and Climate Change NSW (DECC), in partnership with the NSW Government's Environmental Trust, is hosting a two day symposium to explore the strategies and actions to meet the challenge of integrating environmental sustainability in local government.
What: Integrating Sustainability in Local Government: What are the implications for governance, strategy and practice?
When: 24 - 25 November 2008
Where: Luna Park, North Sydney
Who should attend: directors, managers, councillors and sustainability project managers from local and state government
The conference will examine questions such as:
- What are the challenges of environmentally sustainable development for local government in NSW in 2008?
- How do we tackle the complex challenge of sustainability and what are the implications for governance, strategy and practice?
- What does an integrated approach to environmentally sustainable development look like in local government?
- How can we foster peer learning and exchange to support environmentally sustainable development in councils?
Speakers will include a diverse range of sustainability thought leaders and local government sustainability professionals. Confirmed to date are:

- Tim O’Riordan, Professor of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia, UK
- Allan Jones, Director, London Climate Change Agency
- Wayne Westcott, CEO of ICLEI Oceania.
The program will provide opportunities for sharing and celebrating successful local government sustainability programs, including those delivered through the Environmental Trust's Urban Sustainability Program.
