Many NSW schools are helping the fight against climate change by becoming more energy efficient.
Here are some initiatives to help your school save energy and money.
Sustainable Schools NSW
Schools registered for Sustainable Schools NSW (SSNSW) can complete an online School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP), attend Professional Learning Workshops and access advice from experts, energy audit tools, action plan templates, case studies and teaching resources. More than 750 schools are currently registered for this joint Department of Environment and Climate Change NSW (DECC) and Department of Education and Training program.
NSW Schools Energy Efficiency Program
The Schools Energy Efficiency Program under the NSW Government's Climate Change Fund is providing $20 million to upgrade lighting in 150 NSW high schools to cut energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions. Following an initial trial in five schools, 16 high schools will take part in the 2008/2009 Program. Lighting audits and upgrades in these 16 schools will save $80,000 from electricity bills and 820 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year.
National Solar Schools Program
This program is helping primary and secondary schools around the country take practical action to save energy and water while cutting their utility bills. National Solar Schools offers grants of up to $50 000 to install solar and other renewable power systems, solar hot water systems, rainwater tanks and other energy efficiency measures.
With the National Solar Schools funding available until 2016, DECC SSNSW coordinator, Sue Burton is encouraging NSW schools to take some time to plan and consult with their community before applying for this funding.
"This will enable schools to determine the best energy and water efficiency measures for their school, and ensure they are integrated into teaching and learning."
Register for SSNSW for help with planning and integrating energy and water saving initiatives within your school.
In addition to the online SEMP template, the SSNSW website includes a Resource Centre with information on conducting audits, using monitoring tools and further education activities.
