Climbing The Little Green Steps guide is now available to help local government environmental educators and early childhood teachers to teach pre-schoolers about how to look after their local environment.
The resource was presented for the first time on 1 November 2007 at the NSW Environmental Educators Conference in Sydney and will be officially launched on 15 November at the Ourimbah Campus of Newcastle University on the NSW Central Coast.
Building on the highly successful Little Green Steps program for children aged three to five years, the toolkit showcases practical information, strategies and resources for how to get started on developing an early childhood sustainability program.
The easy-to-read manual was developed through a partnership between Wyong Shire and Gosford City Councils with a grant from the NSW Government's Environmental Trust.
The grant is part of the Our Environment - It's a Living Thing Local Council Partnership Program Showcase Grants which, in 2006, awarded funding to seven projects to develop education resources and programs about energy, litter, stormwater, air quality, illegal dumping, waster and urban sustainability.
The projects are:
- Blacktown City Council – Education for Sustainability (EfS): What Strategies Work in Low Socio-economic Areas
- Gosford City Council and Wyong Shire Council – Climbing the Little Green Steps
- Blue Mountains City Council and Charles Sturt University – Hundreds and Thousands in North Katoomba
- Newcastle City Council – Keeping Newcastle's Creeks Alive
- City of Sydney and Marrickville City Council – Urban Sustainability Workshop Series
- Liverpool City Council, Camden Council, Campbelltown City Council, Wollondilly Council and Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living – Strengthening EfS in South West Sydney.
