Living Sustainably

Issue 4 - Mar 2007

Think you're ahead of your neighbours in reducing your water and electricity use? You can now find out in minutes thanks to a free online calculator launched by the State Government in December.

The National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) HOME website - www.nabers.com.au - provides a quick and easy way for families to measure their energy and water consumption and find out ways to save on their bills.

NABERS HOME rating interface

The online calculator takes a few minutes to complete by asking you to enter a years' worth of energy and water bills, plus basic information such as the number of people in your household. The calculator then compares the energy and water consumption of your household to similar homes, with a 'rating' between one and five stars (five representing the most efficient energy and water use).

It offers a quick and cost free way for individual residents to learn how they can make a difference by understanding facts like hot water accounts for more than a third of their household energy costs and that a dripping tap can fill the equivalent of 10 bathtubs in a month.

The new NABERS HOME online resources builds on the NABERS OFFICE rating tool launched last year to help businesses rate their water and energy use.

The Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability (DEUS) administers the NABERS program on behalf of the other States and Territories.
