Living Sustainably

Issue 23 - March 2012

Recycle CFLs at a CleanOut event

Do you have old or unused items that contain chemicals in your kitchen, bathroom, laundry, garage or garden shed?

Many common household items contain chemicals, such as fluorescent globes, gas bottles and cleaning products, and if not disposed of correctly, can have a harmful impact on our environment.

You can drop-off potentially hazardous chemicals at a free household chemical CleanOut event in your area.

Fluorescent globes are one of the many items collected at CleanOut events and are processed to recycle the glass, aluminium and phosphor containing mercury.

A maximum 20 litres or 20 kilograms of each of the following household items will be accepted:

  • acids and alkalis
  • ammonia based cleaners
  • car batteries
  • fire extinguishers
  • floor care products
  • fluorescent globes and tubes
  • gas bottles
  • motor oils, fuels and fluids.
  • paint and paint related products
  • pesticides and herbicides
  • poisons
  • pool and hobby chemicals
  • solvents and cleaners

To find a CleanOut event in your area, visit cleanout.com.au or contact your local council.
