Packaging contributes to landfill and litter in Australia

Packaging can prolong shelf life, ensure hygiene and facilitate safe and efficient transport. However, it also contributes to both landfill and litter in Australia. In 2009-10, packaging waste accounted for 10 per cent of Australia's total waste and litter.

The Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) is a voluntary government and industry initiative designed to minimise the impacts of used packaging and to conserve resources through improved design, increased recycling and reduced packaging litter.

APC members include suppliers and users of packaging, who are required to use the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines to review and optimise consumer packaging, including efficient use of resources and reduced environmental impacts.

You, as a consumer, can now log an enquiry or provide feedback about the design and use of any packaging materials through the new APC Packaging Line. Enquiries will be responded to within three to 20 working days, depending on the nature of the issue you have raised.

To log an enquiry email the APC packaging Line PACK-LINE@packagingcovenant.org.au or call 1300 30 80 30.
