A leopard seal was recently spotted 'hauled-out' on Red Head Beach, south of Dudley NSW.
Leopard seals, whilst mainly found in the Antarctic, are irregular visitors to the coastline and there have been few cases of seals 'hauling out' on beaches during winter.
While it may be tempting to approach them it is important to remember that in most cases the animals are not in trouble but are merely resting on shore, and will return to the sea within a day or two.
Interference from humans and pets can cause great stress and seals can be surprisingly aggressive when frightened. It is important to keep at least 40 metres from any resting seals.
If you see a seal hauled-out on a beach or rocks:
- stay at least 40 metres away
- keep dogs under control and away from the seal
- do not attempt to herd the seal back to water
- do not throw water on the seal or try to feed it.
