The Ethnic Communities' Council of NSW was awarded the prestigious Premier's Sustainability Award as part of the 10th Green Globe Awards, held at NSW Parliament House Tuesday 28 July 2009.

Event host, former Minister for Climate Change and the Environment Carmel Tebbutt said the Council received the award in recognition of its work engaging non-English speaking businesses in water and energy management. "The Green Globe Awards honour organisations that put sustainability and environmental management at the forefront of their operations," Ms Tebbutt said.

"In the decade since these awards began, the scope and depth of environmental achievement in NSW has gone from strength to strength. The record number of nominations received this year reflects the high calibre of environmental achievement in NSW, and the great work underway in business and the broader community to make NSW a greener state."

"I congratulate all the winners and nominees for their achievements," Ms Tebbutt concluded.

The Green Globe Awards have been running since 1999 and are the leading environmental management awards in NSW. The 14 awards acknowledge business, public sector, community and media sustainability achievement.

The Premier's Sustainability Award recipient is selected by the independent panel of judges. The Ethnic Communities' Council of NSW was also awarded the Community Sustainability Green Globe Award for its work with 350 Chinese and Vietnamese-speaking restaurateurs and dry cleaners.

Supported with funding from the NSW Climate Change Fund, Waterless Wok and the Energy Saving in Asian Dry Cleaners programs developed by the Ethnic Communities' Council of NSW helped small businesses upgrade vital equipment to improve water and energy efficiency.

All the winners and full details are available from the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water NSW website at www.environment.nsw.gov.au/greenglobes
