Graham Mawer of Fridge Buyback congratulates Sam Reilly of Berala at the collection of the 5000th fridge.
Five thousand Sydney households will be saving almost $1 million on energy bills this year and more than 5,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. This is due to the collection of the 5,000th fridge under the NSW Government-backed Fridge Buyback program.
Every fridge taken out of circulation saves one tonne of greenhouse gas emissions a year and an average of $190 on electricity bills.
Fridges are the third biggest energy users in NSW homes, after hot water and heating and cooling.
The Fridge Buyback program provides householders with $35 to have old, second fridges collected from their home (fridge removal needs to involve 6 stairs or less). The fridges are professionally degassed under licence and the metals recycled.
Householders in 38 Sydney local government areas can take part in the collection. There are opportunities to expand to a further 14 councils areas in Sydney and regional NSW currently being explored.
Fridges account for approximately 13% of a household's electricity use. Older fridges can use up to three times the amount of energy of new fridges. Almost a third of Sydney households have a second fridge.
To meet NSW Greenhouse Gas Reduction Scheme rules, to be eligible for the Fridge Buyback, the fridge must be a working second fridge that is at least 10 years old and 250 litres in size.
