Waste
Did you know?
Huge amounts of waste are generated in shops, offices, factories and other workplaces in NSW. Sydney alone creates over 1.5 million tonnes of commercial waste each year.
Organisations that reduce waste and recycle more save on production costs and boost their profitability, as well as helping the environment. No matter where you work, there are everyday things you and your colleagues can do to reduce waste.
What can I do?
Easy ways to make a difference:
- Look at all the different types of waste around your workplace – find out about their potential for reuse and recycling
- Avoid wastage, buy what you need and research options to ensure "best fit"
- Set up collection bins for recyclables in handy locations – monitor and improve recycling facilities
- Educate and encourage workplace reuse and recycling – extend the life of resources and products
- Check that office machines are able to use recycled paper
- Set printers and photocopiers to double-sided printing where possible
- Ask suppliers to take back used packaging and recycle it
- Buy products made from recycled materials
- Buy equipment that can be recycled, and that uses recycled-content consumables, such as paper and toner cartridges
