There are many forms of public transport. Depending on your location and your intended destination you may find you have a choice of routes or transport types.
Apart from the immediate environmental benefits, using public transport for all or part of your journey can be economically beneficial especially when you consider and include parking, tolls, fuel and the often ignored running and servicing cost of operating a vehicle. It can also be faster and less stressful than driving, allowing you time to talk, plan and catch-up on reading or work.
As with all means of transport, planning can make a big difference. Plan your journey well to avoid the obvious bottlenecks – rearrange meeting times or locations to avoid peak hour and over-trafficked routes.
One of the biggest obstacles to staff using public transport is lack of information about services, routes, timing and ticketing.
You could encourage greater use of public transport facilities by providing timetables in the staffroom and a link to transport and ticketing information from your intranet. Other strategies you could consider include offering interest-free loans for prepaid quarterly and annual passes, and purchasing a bulk number of tickets for use during the day instead of supplying cab vouchers or fleet vehicles.
