Chemicals
Did you know?
Chemical hazards are the most serious health risks for workers today. Hazardous substances kill 440,000 workers worldwide annually. 10% of all skin cancers are attributable to workplace exposures to hazardous substances.
The cost of not providing safe chemical handling and disposal can have a significant impact on your health and the health of the environment.
What can I do?
Chemicals and hazardous substances in the workplace need not be dangerous if used safely. Awareness of possible risks can avoid sickness, discomfort and lost productivity.
Have staff been trained to store chemicals safely and handle chemical spills? Have you asked your chemical suppliers for the least toxic products? Are your chemicals being transported safely?
Easy ways to make a difference:
- Reduce the use of hazardous and dangerous materials to minimise risks
- Use water-based or plant-based, biodegradable and non-toxic paints, strippers, cleaners, degreasers and pest repellents wherever possible
- Regularly check your storage area for any signs of leaks or damage to containers and make sure container lids are tightly sealed when not in use
- Make sure all chemicals are labelled correctly and are not stored beyond their recommended shelf-life
- Develop a chemical spill emergency response procedure to prevent chemical spills and make sure staff know what to do if spills occur
- Dispose of hazardous chemicals lawfully and in the least environmentally damaging way
- Dispose of chemical-soaked absorbents from spill kits lawfully
- Do not mix different liquid wastes
- Make sure all staff know that paint, solvents and other toxic substances must not be poured into stormwater drains or on the ground
- Remove large unwanted quantities of hazardous chemicals by engaging a licensed transporter to carry them to a licensed waste receiver or disposal facility
- Wear appropriate protective gear to avoid injury from chemical exposure
