Transport

Did you know?

Sedentary lifestyles are resulting in alarming health risks – recent reports suggest more than 20% of Australians under 18 years and 50% of those over, are overweight or obese.

To stay healthy we need to spend at least 30 minutes a day doing moderate physical activity, but for many people recreation involves mostly passive activities. Even when we travel, we often take the car instead of opting for a more active form of transport.

If we drive less and take more active forms of transport we can improve our health and wellbeing, generate fewer greenhouse gases and reduce pollution.

What can I do?

Driving less doesn't mean you have to stay at home. Can you walk or cycle instead of driving to the gym, pool or park? Can you travel to weekend sport by car pooling or using public transport?

Easy ways to make a difference:

  1. Leave the car at home, particularly for short trips – use public transport, cycle or walk
  2. Integrate more walking or cycling into your lifestyle – think about physical activity when you plan days out
  3. Plan your trips – spend less time in transit, avoid peak hours and plan your route
  4. Spend less time travelling – check transport notices and media for closure, traffic or change of access notices
  5. Plan and choose locations – choose convenient venues with easy access, within walking or cycling distances or close to public transport facilities
  6. Share travelling with friends – organise to travel together
  7. Find out about special public transport services for major public events
  8. Ask event and activity organisers to develop transport action plans – investigate group transport and low-energy transport options
  9. Ask your local council to organise special transport for community events
