Managing a public place? Where to start

Before introducing a public place recycling system, gather information and data to gain an awareness of how waste is currently managed and collected. In particular:

  • Investigate and understand the current waste collection service – how does it operate? Is there scope to adapt or expand the service?
  • Talk to staff and users of the public place about their practices and attitudes to recycling – any changes to existing practices will need the support of all
  • Undertake a waste audit – are you missing recycling opportunities? what materials are being collected?
  • Look at waste and recycling systems in surrounding areas such as parks and shopping precincts – are there lessons to be learned? Opportunities to be exploited?

Consult the Better Practice Guide for Public Place Recycling for great tips on how to undertake an audit and develop a recycling system.

Discuss your recycling needs and objectives with tenants or regular users of the public place – encourage greater use of materials that can be reused and recycled, and secure commitment and assistance in their recovery. For example, if your public place has food outlets on-site or nearby, encourage food providers to use recyclable packaging for their products.
