Disposing waste the right way

If you have thought about all the ways to re-use or recycle an item and there is no other option but disposal, make sure you do it the right way.

Household Chemical CleanOut Program

If you live in the Sydney, Hunter or Illawarra regions you can drop off your household chemical materials at a weekend CleanOut Event. Find a CleanOut location near you or call the Hotline on 131 555.

Materials that will be accepted include:

  • paint and paint-related products (thinners, strippers, varnish)
  • pesticides and herbicides (e.g. fungicides, baits, poisons, wood preservatives)
  • solvents and household cleaners
  • motor oils and fuels
  • batteries
  • gas bottles, fire extinguishers, flares
  • pool chemicals, acids and alkalis, hobby chemicals (e.g. photography chemicals)

Only household quantities are accepted and can be dropped off at any of the advertised locations.

Medicines

Expired or unwanted medicines can be returned to any pharmacy for safe and free disposal. Contact your pharmacy or visit the Return Unwanted Medicines website for more information.

Household furniture and Appliances

Don't leave unwanted household furniture and appliances outside your home, in bushland or on the street.

Call your local council to discuss how these items may be disposed, you may be able to arrange a special collection. Find out and note on your calendar the scheduled Clean up days and also make a note of the location of local transfer stations, waste management centres and/or tips where you can take materials.

Building Waste

Ask your builder or tradesperson about how they will manage waste. Request they focus on waste minimisation and verify excess materials will be recycled appropriately.
