Project:

Greenhome and Sustainable Australia

Background

The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) has two projects funded within the Our environment - it's a living thing partnership:

Project activities

GreenHome

GreenHome has two components:

  • face-to-face workshops and,
  • the web-based GreenHome Challenge.

Both aim to achieve reductions in greenhouse emissions, water use and waste production through Sustainable Living behaviour change at the household level.

The face-to-face workshop program runs in local areas with householders attending workshops on the topics of water, waste, energy, food and gardens, transport, household chemicals and shopping. It also involves one-off events focusing on specific topics.

The GreenHome website enables anyone to participate in the program and serves as a valuable tool for engaging the community.  Visit the Greenhome website you can join the GreenHome Challenge or calculate the impact of your lifestyle using our interactive eco-calculator.

Sustainable Australia

Sustainable Australia is a research-based project, which will deliver a number of products including:

  • a state-by-state comparison of consumption patterns which will be ready for Buy Nothing Day (27 Nov 2005)
  • a Christmas guide comparing the impact of different goods, services and foods
  • a four page brochure profiling the most sustainable suburbs in each state
  • an environmental atlas mapping Australian consumption impacts as measured by Land Disturbance, Greenhouse Pollution, Water use and Materials flow

Outcomes and successes

Greenhome

To date, ACF has run three GreenHome workshop series in NSW – in Bankstown, Parramatta and Castle Hill. There have also been two GreenHome events, one about food and one for home renovators focusing on energy and water saving.

An interactive, resource rich website has also been established enabling anyone to participate in the program.

Sustainable Australia

Research into the environmental impact of Australian Christmas spending and purchasing habits has been released.

The report The Hidden Cost of Christmas discusses the environmental impact of Australian Christmas spending and calculates the environmental impact of Australia's Christmas spending on books, confectionary, clothes, alcoholic beverages and electrical appliances.
