Sustainability in the community

Project:

Scouts

Background

The Scouts movement across NSW has adopted the Our environment - it's a living thing theme for many of its environmentally focused activities.

Scouts environmental adventures now include learning how to 'read the bush', playing in eco-dramas and understanding salinity and energy conservation.

Project activities

Energy efficient lighting, water saving programs and devices, waste minimising policies and solar energy are becoming a part of Scouts' everyday lives - along with tree-planting and recycling.

Our Environment Badge

Scout Environment Badge

Scouts who achieve environmental targets and make sustainability improvements are rewarded with a new badge — Our environment - it's a living thing badge.

This badge serves to reward NSW scouts for environmental achievements.

NSW Scouts also participate in a range of environmental activities, organised by the State Environment Activity Team.  A variety of interactive programmes and projects are incorporated including Scout Environment Weeks which are run annually in September, State Environment Activity Camps, education and environmental awareness workshops, and actual hands-on activities.

Outcomes and successes

Sustainability and efficient resource use are becoming a part of Scouts' everyday lives.

Over 2,500 Sustainable scouts have been rewarded with the Our environment - it's a living thing badge for environmental achievements.

State Environment Activity Camp Badge

In addition, more than 800 scouts participated in Scouts Environment Week 2005, with activities including environmental education, weed reduction, riverwatch and reducing energy use.

Scouts Tree Planting

As a part of their Murray Darling River Rescue to Halt the Salt in the Riverina, NSW Scouts planted 20,000 trees around Wagga Wagga during a two day camp in July 2005.

Scouts NSW is also promoting the importance of incorporating sustainability and environmental education with Scouts programs across the globe, and featured it as part of their input to the International Scouts Program Review at last year's Scout conference in Wagga.

How to get involved and find out more

All Scouting formations are encouraged to get out there and get their hands dirty running an environmental project of their own or help another environmental organisation achieve their goals.
