Living Sustainably

Have your old fridge taken away, degassed and recycled

The NSW Government's Fridge Buyback Program has now expanded to the Hunter region, offering households in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland $35 to have their second fridge taken away. Old fridges are professionally degassed and recycled, which helps our environment.

Older models use up to three times the energy of today's energy efficient fridges, so getting rid of it can save you about $265 a year on power bills.

Since the program began, 29,370 second fridges have been collected in NSW, saving around $7.8 million on annual power bills.

To be eligible, second fridges must be in regular use, at least 10 years old and 250 litres or more in size. The $35 rebate is paid for collections from homes with six steps or less. Collection is free, but no rebate is paid, where collection involves between 7-20 steps.

Fridge Buyback is also available to households in Sydney, Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Illawarra and the Shoalhaven.

Bookings are now being taken for collections in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland.
